My Favorite Children's Books

My completely arbitrary and biased list of favorites so far.  Or right now.  Or Whatever.
Can I Play, Too?  by Mo Willems.  Funniest kids book I have ever read.  My 5 (now 7) year old showed no interest in reading until he discovered he could read this and make his Mom laugh out loud.
Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.  My husband and I both have this book memorized and we'll recite it with all the right sound effects when the kids need a story but there's no books around.  It was read to even our oldest child in the womb.

The Terrible Plop by Ursula Dubosarsky.  Funny book with a fun rhyme structure and a great take home message.
Illustrated Poems for Children.  I'm a sucker for a good rhyme, and first read this collection huddled together with my 4 older siblings.  This book is out of print, but all the adult children in my family have been snapping up used copies to read to our own kids.

Moo, Baa, La La La!  By Sandra Boynton.  Yes, it's a board book. But I bet that if you heard my two year old reciting it, it would land on your favorites list, too.

the Little House Books by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  I am soundly ridiculed by all my close friends for wanting to own a cow someday.

Ronia, the Robber's Daughter by Astrid Lindgen.  In this book, a little girl runs off and lives in the woods because when she is forbidden from associating with her friend Birk, who is the son of her family's sworn enemy.  I read it when I was 8, nearly ran off into the woods myself, and still  have a completely irrational attachment to it.  I actually broke up with a guy who made fun of it once.  Don't mess with Ronia.
